About The Lakes Mountaineer

I'm Ben, a qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader. I deliver all the courses, experiences and adventures. I have over 25 years of experience of leading and instruction in the mountains.

One of the best thing about the mountains is that they treat everyone the same. Similarly, I welcome everyone and anyone to enjoy days out with me in the mountains, whatever your background, level of challenge, knowledge or ability.

The Lakes Mountaineer runs the full selection of Mountain Training courses in the Lake District on behalf of Crag 2 Mountain. Open to all ages 12+, they are an ideal way of advancing your skills.
The courses are: Hill & Mountain Skills, Rock Skills: Introduction, Rock Skills: Intermediate, Learn to Lead Sport, Learn to Lead Trad.

Running throughout the year, we can offer courses for any age or ability. Whether total beginner or someone wanting more advanced navigation in the mountains, join a scheduled National Navigation Award Scheme course, or a bespoke day.

Mini-Mountains: Abseiling. climbing and a treasure hunt (navigation!). Best for families with kids aged 7and over.

Mighty Mountains: Rock climbing, abseiling and scrambling - best for families with older kids (11+).

Mega-Mountains: Parent and child scrambling day: for the more adventurous, an all-day scramble in the mountains - 2 people only.

The Lakes Mountaineer offers coaching, instruction and guiding. We have a range of courses from taster sessions for complete beginners through to self-rescue techniques for the advanced climber. So whether you want some coaching in climbing movement, want to  be guided up some mountainous routes or learn how to lead climb, click here to read more.  And don't forget we run Mountain Training rock skills courses too.

Tackling the Wainwrights, climbing England's highest mountain, taking on a challenge or finding solitude in the hills; the reasons for mountain walking are many and various. With The Lakes Mountaineer, you'll be guided on whatever route suits you (and the weather!).  Winter skills courses, family walks or summer outings - in the mountains there is always something to do.

Somewhere between walking and rock climbing lies mountaineering, or scrambling. From grade 1 routes like Jack's Rake in the Langdales through to grade 3 Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag, the routes are part of a journey through the mountains. Join The Lakes Mountaineer and be guided up the routes, or come and learn the skills to become independent.
