Bronze Navigator Award

£155/person for 2-day course

18 & 19 March 2024 - Milnthorpe

This is a practical hands-on award. It is aimed at people with no navigation experience whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes.

You will learn to: navigate using a variety of maps and scales; use grid references; orientate the map using obvious features; use linear features (e.g. paths, tracks, clear boundaries); understand contours; how to orientate the map using a compass; what to do to get un-lost; how to plan and implement simple routes; about national access issues and the Countryside Code; about appropriate equipment.

Silver Navigator Award

£165 per person for 2-day course
plus £5 NNAS registration and certificate fees

25 & 26 March 2024 - Langdales
Bespoke dates available

The Silver National Navigation Award develops the navigation skills acquired at the Bronze level. It adds skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks. It teaches accurate compass work. It will also teach you to select the suitable navigational techniques to cross open country - typical Cumbria navigation.

On the course, you will: relate small hills etc to map contours; use landforms and locations to orientate the map and as collecting and catching features; follow a bearing; aim off; check the direction of handrails and other linear features; know how to avoid obstacles or difficult terrain and regain the original line; use back bearings; measure distance on the ground; simplify legs using coarse navigation and attack points; recognise dangerous or difficult terrain; maintain route finding accuracy in poor visibility or darkness; recognise a navigation error and use relocation techniques.
